Agrarian Girl announced herself as a filly of serious promise with a courageous victory in the Listed Darley Lonhro Plate (1000m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday, digging deep to score on debut against a quality field of two-year-olds.
Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott and ridden with confidence by Winona Costin, the daughter of Tassort showed maturity beyond her experience. After jumping cleanly, Agrarian Girl settled into a prominent position before showing tenacity under pressure, fending off late challengers to prevail in a thrilling finish.
The win capped off a bold decision by her trainers to start her career at stakes level, a move that was well rewarded as the filly refused to yield when challenged in the final 100 metres, holding on strongly to secure black-type honours at her first race appearance.
Agrarian Girl boasts deep Emirates Park credentials, having been bred and sold by Emirates Park at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, where she realised $280,000. She is the first foal of Liwa, a mare bred and raced by Emirates Park, who was trained in Western Australia by Simon Miller during her racing career.
Liwa’s transition from the racetrack to the breeding barn has been an immediate success, with Agrarian Girl delivering a stakes win at the very first opportunity — a significant result for Emirates Park’s breeding program.
With her unbeaten record intact and a Listed victory already on the board, Agrarian Girl has immediately placed herself among the leading juveniles of the season. Her toughness, speed and professionalism suggest there is plenty more to come as connections begin mapping out her autumn campaign.
Saturday’s Lonhro Plate triumph not only marked a perfect debut for Agrarian Girl, but also highlighted the strength of the Emirates Park bloodlines — from racetrack to sales ring and back to the winner’s stall on one of Australia’s biggest stages.
