Sydney metropolitan double to Al Maher
JANUARY 21, 2012: The prolific nature of AL MAHER’s stud career was again in evidence on the latest metropolitan program staged in Sydney when two members of the stallion’s oldest crop posted an impressive Rosehill Gardens double.
Talented 5-year-old mare Cabernet was seen at her very best when winning Race 6 on the card by an impressive two and three-quarter lengths winning margin. Ridden off the pace until turning for home, the Grahame Begg-trained galloper made light work of picking up the leaders half-way down the straight, subsequently clearing out from her rivals under a hands and heels ride.
Cabernet’s latest victory was the fifth of her career from only 14 starts. When interviewed immediately after the dominant win, Begg claimed that he was confident the daughter of AL MAHER had the ability to pick-up a black-type victory at some stage of her future campaign and nominated the Listed Wiggle Quality as a possible target in the coming weeks.
Proven black-type performer Kinnersley provided AL MAHER with his notable double when virtually leading from start to finish in the final race of the day. Having his first start since July 2011, Kinnersley held on gamely to win the 1300m handicap after being made to work throughout the contest. The 5-year-old brown gelding has now won three of his nine lifetime starts and also Group-placed second in the Tasmanian Derby (G3) as a 3-year-old.
Both Cabernet and Kinnersley are members of AL MAHER’s first-crop to race. Other representatives of the very same foal crop include Group winners Majestic Music, King Lionheart, Speedy Natalie, Marheta and Budriguez, as well as the very recent 2012 VRC Bagot Handicap (LR) winner Unchain My Heart. |
