Kinnersley places in Group 3 Derby

FEBRUARY 1, 2010: Star Thoroughbreds-raced and Gai Waterhouse-trained Kinnersley became the latest black-type performer sired by Al Maher when finishing a courageous runner-up in the Group 3 TTC Tasmanian Derby (2200m).

Drawn towards the outside in a 13-horse field, Kinnersley was ridden with vigor to take up a position just outside the leader negotiating the first turn. Come the top of the home straight, the Sydney-based 3-year-old kicked to a clear advantage and looked the likely winner, before failing to hold off the late surge of Geegees Blackflash.

Kinnersley is the fifth black-type galloper sired by Al Maher following the fillies Majestic Music, Speedy Natalie, Bint Maher and Motown Lady. From just six outings overall, Kinnersley has won two races and has finished second on another two occasions, already returning more than his $80,000 purchase price in earnings.

Al Maher was also responsible for the first winner of the day at Kembla Grange when Acouplamas won a Maiden Plate staged over 1000 metres on the same afternoon. The Dynamic Syndications-raced and Kevin Moses-trained filly became the 27th first-crop 3-year-old winner for Al Maher of the 2009/10 racing season.
