Guineas winner for Al Maher

JANUARY 25, 2010: Al Maher shouldn’t have too long to wait for his second stakes winning 3-year-old filly of the current racing season going on the comfortable victory of Feerique in the Acelands Stud 1000 Guineas (1600m) at Launceston.

Trained in Tasmania by Gary White, the first-crop daughter of Al Maher came out on top in a nine-horse field, landing the prestigious contest by a length and a quarter.

Feerique has now won three races as a 2- and 3-year-old, having been among the very first members of the breed to have saluted as a juvenile. She now has two Listed black-type stakes events very much in her sights, beginning with the $80,000 Strutt Stakes (2100m) and followed by the $150,000 Tasmanian Oaks (2100m).

Feerique is one of a dozen or so members of Al Maher’s first-crop 3-year-olds targeting black-type Classics over the coming months. These include the Gai Waterhouse-trained Kinnersley, who holds a nomination for the Group 3 Tasmanian Derby (2200m) staged on Saturday, January 30.
