Sydney 2YO trial winner for Al Samer

SEPTEMBER 21, 2009: The first official barrier trials of the Sydney 2009/10 2-year-old racing season have witnessed a first-crop son of Al Samer prove successful. In Heat 7 of nine hosted by the Australian Jockey Club on the Kensington circuit at Randwick, Al Samui scored for the Neville Layt stable, defeating representatives of the Peter Snowden and Kevin Moses yards.

Al Samui was bred by Emirates Park and sold to Layt at the 2009 Sydney Classic Yearling Sale. He is the fifth foal of Delightful Attire, an unplaced daughter of Cryptoclearance that is a half-sister to the dual Group 1 winner He’s No Pie Eater (by Canny Lad). Delightful Attire was conceived in North America to southern hemisphere time and foaled in Australia late in November 1998. Her second-dam is the celebrated matriarch Show Lady, a broodmare one immediately relates with the family of champion sire Redoute’s Choice, celebrated stallions Umatilla (NZ) and Hurricane Sky, as well as Emirates Park’s emerging star Al Maher.

Al Samui’s barrier trial success illustrates the precocious nature and considerable promise of the Al Samer breed. An October 26, 2007, foal, Al Samui is not yet 24 months old. It is also worth recalling that Al Samer placed in the Listed AJC Breeders’s Plate at his first start as a 2-year-old before winning the Group 3 ACT Black Opal Stakes later in his juvenile season.
