BIG THINGS EXPECTED FROM LITTLE ACORNS

MAY ’08: The brilliant run of Secret Savings witnessed since the beginning of the year continued at the feature race meeting staged at Doomben this weekend when progeny of the established grandson of Mr Prospector posted a juvenile stakes race victory and Group 1 weight-for-age placing.

Represented by Acorns and Swiss Ace on a high-class program conducted by the Brisbane Turf Club (BTC), Secret Savings supplied the winner of the Listed BTC Golden Stakes (1200m) and the minor placegetter in the highly contested Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m).

One of the leading 2-year-olds seen in Brisbane this racing season, Acorns added to his stakes race collection by staying on strongest in the former. Despite racing a shade waywardly over the concluding stages, the juvenile son of Secret Savings was doing all of his best work in the shadows of the post to score by a half-head.

In the biggest race of the day run anywhere in Australia, Swiss Ace fought out the finish of the BTC Cup at Group 1 level with Apache Cat and Vormista just managing to get the better. The Secret Savings 3-year-old has now won or placed in five consecutive stakes races, winning three straight including the Group 2 QTC Sir Byrne Hart Stakes.

Under any standards, Secret Savings has been one of the leading stallions in Australia since the beginning of the year. In addition to Acorns and Swiss Ace, his major performers have included the likes of Cent Per Cent, Viatorian, Swissac and Savquaw, all of which have figured in black-type company.
